A Group Child Care Center is defined by Wisconsin DCF as “a facility which provides care and supervision to 9 or more children for less than 24 hours per day.” The following information lists the course titles of the required courses for each position in a group child care center.
Assistant Child Care Teacher: An assistant child care teacher shall work under the supervision of a child care teacher with a group of children. The required courses for certification are:
- Introduction to the Child Care Profession
- Fundamentals of Infant & Toddler Care (if working with children under 2 years of age)
- School-Age Assistant Child Care Worker (if working with school-age children)
Child Care Teacher: The child care teacher shall plan, implement and supervise the daily activities for a group of children. The required courses for certification are:
- Introduction to the Child Care Profession
- Skills & Strategies for the Child Care Teacher
- Fundamentals of Infant & Toddler Care (if working with children under 2 years of age)
Center Director for a facility licensed to serve up to 50 children:
This individual must have completed 2 non-credit department-approved courses in early childhood education and within one year of assuming the position, one course in the Wisconsin Child Care Administrators Credential or its equivalent. The non-credit department-approved courses may include:
- Introduction to the Child Care Profession
- Skills & Strategies for the Child Care Teacher
Center Director for a facility licensed to serve 51 or more children:
This individual must have 4 non-credit department-approved courses in early childhood education or its equivalent and complete the Wisconsin Child Care Administrators Credential within three years of assuming the position. Up to 2 courses in the Wisconsin Child Care Administrators Credential may be used to meet the early childhood education requirement, if taken prior to beginning to work as a Center Director. The 4 non-credit department-approved courses may include:
- Introduction to the Child Care Profession
- Skills & Strategies for the Child Care Teacher
- Two completed modules from the Administrators Credential
